I have always been annoyed that I am a light sleeper, and now with this over active thyroid/pregnancy, I sleep even less! But last night it really came in handy! Sam has had the habbit of coming into my room in the middle of the night, and laying down with me in bed. I, having little energy, let him. But with a new baby coming in March (who will sleep in our room and probably want to wake me every 2 hours to eat), I decided enough is enough. So, last night, it was the same thing. He came in at 3:30 and tried to climb in bed with me. I told him no and to go get back in bed. He did leave, and I thought I heard the squeek of his door knob so I started to drift off to sleep. I really don't know how much time passed, but at some point, while I was in the twilight zone, I was startled awake by what I thought was the ringing of the doorbell. You know how it is, when you are almost asleep, your mind plays tricks on you! I laid there a minute to see if it rang again, it didn't, so I almost went back to sleep. But then Mother's Intuition kicked in (if anyone can explain this phenomenon to me, please do! It's mind blowing!), and I woke up Brian to see if he heard it. Well, of course he didn't because he is a SOUND sleeper and never hears anything (sometimes, like when babies are crying, I think it's intentional!). But I asked him to investigate anyway. He stood at the top of the stairs, looking down towards the front door....I think he was somewhat confused! I then mentioned that Sam had come into our room a few minutes earlier, and then it hit me that Sam can't open the front door from the outside, so he always rings the doorbell when he needs in! Brian went into Sam's room, and low and behold....no Sam!!! He went downstairs, opened the front door, and found a very scared Sam! He had gone outside to find the car because he left his blanket in there the day before! It was a disappointment to him when he saw that the car was NOT in the driveway, it was in the garage!
Needless to say, I didn't sleep from about 4 am on because I couldn't stop thinking about what if I hadn't heard the doorbell!!?! You hear all these stories about very young children wondering the streets in the early morning or middle of the night in their pj's and barefeet, and you always think, at least, I do....that that will never happen to my kids! And, how dare those parents not pay attention to their young child! But my own 3 year old got out of our house at almost 4 am in his pj's and barefeet and couldn't get back in!! It scares me to think what would have happened if......
Whew! I think I am going to need a nap today!
